The Birch Bark Buffets And Cabinets by Union Wood Co.
Founded in 2009, Union Wood Co. set its roots in creating high-quality handcrafted buffets and cabinets from reclaimed wood, especially Birch Bark. Scouring demolition sites and abandoned buildings for the best old wood, our designs were nostalgic of Vancouver’s forgotten industrial foundries, mills, and docks: honest, raw and utilitarian.
Possibly born in the wrong era, Craig Pearce has always been drawn to the natural lore of aging things and fascinated by the unassuming objects of industrial origin. With a background in trades, in 2005 Craig took a job working with a rustic log cabin furniture maker and immediately discovered a passion for handcrafted furniture.
In particular, furniture made from good wood. Through this union of two interests, Union Wood Company was born. Craig scoured local sites for the best old-growth wood and then allowed the design be inspired by the character of the reclaimed wood. The rest, as they say, is history.
Vancouver-based Union Wood Co utilizes real birch bark to complete their series of lacquered storage cabinets. Birch bark is an adaptable material often used in Northern indigenous handicrafts as its durability and strength, along with its organic surface pattern, create beautiful results. The Birch Bark Series of cabinets feature door panels clad in birch bark that’s harvested in northeastern Alaska, which are paired with black or white lacquered cabinets for a modern look.
As each tree’s bark is completely unique, the bark doors will be as well, guaranteeing one-of-a-kind pieces. The cabinets come in various sizes, ranging from bedside pieces to credenzas, making sure there’s one to fit your needs.
